Nautical Decor: Pillows!
Are you in the market for some great nautical pillows? Well, then, we have a review you want to read!
You may have read Our Story and already know that an $89 pillow {what?!} started us on this journey to create custom and affordable nautical decor. What you may not know is that this nautical chart pillow was the original design in our journey!
And we just had to own it. We didn’t, however, have a good excuse to make that purchase, until now! 😉
We recently redecorated our spare bedroom, and since it is, primarily, out-of-town guests who sleep here, we really wanted a little touch of Stuart in that room. We seized that opportunity {okay, that excuse} and made the purchase!

And Here’s Our In-depth Nautical Pillow Review
Disclosure of NON-Compensation: We were NOT paid a fee, given a discount, or afforded any incentive whatsoever, in exchange for our review. We’re legit consumers wanting a nautical chart pillow with custom latitude and longitude corresponding to our little town!
We’ve come to expect great quality from this manufacturer — Manual WW — having purchased fabulous tote bags from them in the past, and we weren’t disappointed. This particular pillow design features a nautical chart printed onto fabric {it’s already cool, right?} and then space for any town or name, if you’d rather, and then latitude and longitude coordinates which may be personalized, as well. The pillow is available in three fabric options: Brushed Polyester, Grade A Cotton, and Outdoor. We purchased the Grade A Cotton option.
Here are the factors we considered in our review:
- Printing: Taking into consideration that the very detailed nautical chart is printed on a weaved cotton fabric {versus charting paper}, we feel the printing is quite good! You can see in the photo that there’s a tiny bit of blur getting up close, as expected, and in the photo above, there’s no evidence of blur. The printed color are true to the original graphic. The black stencil print is actually a dark shade of gray on screen, so that matches, as well. We think the reproduction is excellent!
- Stuffing: As you see in the photo above, we noticed, first, that the pillow seemed a little overstuffed. We don’t think that’s a bad thing. To us, it just means the insert is brand new and fluffy. We expect that it’ll compact a little bit with use.
- Stitching: We looked around all of the edges, and every stitch is perfect. You can see one section in the photo. Also, inside, you can see the edges are were sewn using a Serger, making for a strong seam.
- Zipper: The zipper is sewn in well and pulls easily, when the insert is squished a little.
- Fabric: The fabric is fairly smooth to the touch, but also feels sturdy. It’s not likely to get caught on anything or tear.
- Size: The pillow is advertised as being 16 inches by 12 inches, and that’s where we have our single complaint. The finished size of the pillow is 15 inches by 12 inches. That measurement was taken from the pillow cover itself, seam to seam, stuffing removed, and with the cover lying flat on the bed.
But let’s talk about that size “issue” another minute. Anyone familiar with nautical charts knows that many charts have a border with latitudinal and longitudinal degree markings, a chart number, and other information outside of the border. When we designed this pillow, and being a little bit of a seamstress, we placed the nautical chart such that the white border would be inside of the printed bleed line, but outside of printed design area. We expected the white border would then be made a part of the inner seam, thus leaving more printed nautical chart on the pillow itself. We believe that what happened here is that the manufacturer, erring on the side of caution, cut the fabric just inside of that border. So while we’re noting the size difference, we feel it’s appropriate to laud a manufacturer who doesn’t just “assembly line” their work.
So that’s that! If you’re in the market for a nautical chart pillow, like this one, you can see the current selection in our pillows department, filed under rectangle pillows.
